P·P·O·W is pleased to announce representation of Daniel Correa Mejía. Combining painting, drawing, sculpture, and writing, the artist’s practice deftly mines imagery from his own subconscious to mythologize the landscape of his interior world.
His highly symbolic figures personify various emotional states, becoming one with their scenery as contemporary society fades away and sacred, primordial knowledge is uncovered. Juxtaposing rich ultramarine with vibrant red on rough jute canvas, Correa Mejía invokes the complimentary nature of masculine and feminine energies to summon the divine power of contrasting forces, simultaneously grappling with the process of grief and loss, rediscovering sanctuary within the power of the human imagination and the interconnectivity of our shared planet. In the artist’s own poetic words, “It’s me and the Earth existing in gravity / It’s me, and the emotional poetry in search of reflection.”
Since its inception more than forty years ago, P·P·O·W has maintained a programmatic dedication to exhibiting narrative art and painting. Gallery co-founder Wendy Olsoff believes that “Correa Mejía expands on this aspect of the gallery’s program, as his practice connects the queer-coded imagery of painters like Martin Wong to contemporary artists we represent like Elizabeth Glaessner and Astrid Terrazas, who both explore surreal worldbuilding in service of investigating human emotions.”
P·P·O·W presented its first solo exhibition of Correa Mejía at the gallery in October 2023, and will bring new work by the artist to ART SG in Singapore in January 2025. This year, Correa Mejía was the subject of a solo exhibition at Maureen Paley, London, and currently has a solo presentation of new work at mor charpentier, Bogotá, Colombia. Correa Mejía’s work is also presently on view at Museum MORE, Gorssel, Netherlands.
