If you’re reading this, congratulations – you’ve made it to the final level of 2023… and my last art list for the year.
A lot is closing this month – which means new beginnings in 2023 – so I’ve included a few “last chance to see” shows here. Of course, there’s the usual museum, gallery, and online mix, so I hope you’ll be able to use this list in whatever way you can. Don’t forget some shows from last month’s list are still running (like City of Kings at Howl! and Theaster Gates’ retrospective at New Museum, both in New York City), so make sure to re-visit if you’re looking for even more (!) to see. I’ll be back here in January as a bright, shiny new year of contemporary art dawns.
SUBMISSION, BROOKLYN MUSEUM, NEW YORK, USA
There are few things to say when a photographic legend like Jimmy DeSana gets their first-ever museum retrospective but: finally. Described as a “significant yet overlooked” figure of New York City’s art and LGBTQIA scenes, DeSana’s career but short but deeply impactful, particularly his response to the 1980s HIV/AIDS crisis. With over 200 works on show, expect to see DeSana’s suburban, nude, portraiture, and abstract works. True pieces of history are being handed to us here – don’t miss it!
Until April 16 2023
