"One of my favorite aspects of working at P·P·O·W is collaborating with artists whose work reveals our society’s faults while presenting ideas for change. For my Five Favorites, I chose a selection of works that reflect on and reimagine the way we view ourselves and our relationships to one another.
From Betty Tompkins' Tool Series and Portia Munson’s Bound Angel works to Robin F. Williams' gouaches of scenes from horror movies, several of the artists in the gallery’s program examine the specific roles and repressive ideals that have traditionally been assigned to female-identifying figures in our society. Conversely, Astrid Terrazas and Anton van Dalen’s narrative paintings present viewers with an optimism afforded by collective efforts and the generative capabilities of community.
In presenting this selection of works, I hope to demonstrate the power of art to not only reveal the need for change, but also to foster new ideas and hope for the future."
