The much-anticipated 14th iteration of Independent New York, a cutting-edge art fair, is on view from May 11-14 at Spring Studios. Upwards of 120 artists and 74 galleries and nonprofits from around the world convene for the leading event, which also acts as a biennial, selecting exhibitors by nomination. Four floors of the expansive space present 50 duo and solo shows, 10 artists who are hosting simultaneous museum exhibitions, and the debut of 22 New York creatives. Poignant themes of this year’s edition reflect momentous evolutions in global art and culture: Gender as a Social Construction dynamically explores fluidity, femininity, and marginalized communities with artists like Connor Marie Stankard, Judith Bernstein, and Antonius-Tín Bui; Return to Childhood examines first inspirations, family influences, and the fertile imagination with galleries such as Vito Schnabel Gallery, Various Small Fires, and VITRINE; Post Figuration and Magical Realism is a presentation of deft and emotional artworks, often infused with art historical references, from artists like Joseph Olisaemeka Wilson and Michelle Uckotter; and Career Reassessments and Rediscoveries take a closer look at enduring, meaningful pieces by artists such as Nicholas Pope, Richard Van Buren, and Kimathi Donkor.
“Independent will headline the newly expanded art month in New York for the second year in a row, making this an important moment for the global art market capital and museum community,” explained Founder Elizabeth Dee. “This year’s edition offers fresh perspectives and thoughtful discourse, capturing the most important issues of our time. For those that are interested in looking to the future of art, Independent is the one place in New York’s fair calendar that has a consistent track record of both innovation and discovery.”
